Four persons held for possession of gutka in Tiruvannamalai

Four people were arrested in Sundakkampalayam village near Chengam town in Tiruvannamalai after police seized about 500 kg of gutka from two vehicles on Wednesday.

The arrested persons have been identified as V. Dinesh Kumar, 35, R. Vijay Kumar, 45, B. Devasri, 30, and T. Mousbass, 35. They belong to Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Acting on the orders of D. Uthayakumar, SP (Tiruvannamalai), a police team conducted a surprise check on the Cuddalore-Chittoor highway near the city when the team stopped two cars.

Police said the four people in the cars gave conflicting answers about the purpose of their visit and were unable to produce valid documents for the vehicles. A further inspection of their cars led to the seizure of a large quantity of gutka. The gang told the police that the contraband was obtained from Telangana to be sold to retailers in Puduchery.

The vehicles were impounded and the arrested persons lodged in Vellore Central Jail. Another probe is underway.
