Four people in Ambur held for selling a child

Four persons were arrested by the Ambur town police in Tirupattur on Sunday for selling a nine-day-old baby boy to a couple in Bengaluru for ₹1 lakh.

The arrested persons were identified as Rahmatullah (42), R. Aushma (37) and Bengaluru couple Shameen Taj (30) and Syed Akbar Basha (35).

Initial investigation revealed that Rahmatullah was married to Aushma and the family had been living in Ambur town for the past few years.

Police said Aushma gave birth to a boy on August 14 at the Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore. With her husband out of work, Aushma reportedly felt that the couple could not afford to take care of their four children.

The police said several brokers who were on the run were aware of her plight and made a deal with her to sell the couple’s child in Bengaluru. Her husband Rahmatullah also knew about the deal and Aushma sold the child to the couple.

Police said that when the hospital authorities wanted to conduct a checkup on the newborn, the couple was reluctant to bring the baby to the government hospital. This prompted authorities to alert officials of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Tirupattur.

The police said that based on the complaint of the CWC, a case was registered by the Ambur city police. The Bengaluru couple was traced and the child was rescued. A probe is underway.
