Four convicts detained for assault Sulur sexual assault accused

The Race Course police have registered the formal arrest of four convicts accused of assaulting K. Karthi (35), the main accused in the sexual assault-cum-murder of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur, during a scuffle at the Coimbatore Central Jail on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
The Race Course said four people were charged with assault based on a complaint filed by a prison officer. Since they were convicted in the jail, the police recorded their formal arrest in the jail as per due process with the concerned Magistrate, Race Track Inspector G. Jeyachandran said.
Police sources said the incident took place at a hospital on the prison premises. Karthi was in the hospital as he was still recovering from fractures to his right leg and right hand sustained when he allegedly tried to flee from the police on May 22.
They added that the four convicts attacked him with their hands and objects such as a pen, a spoon and a plate. Jail staff immediately intervened and saved him and shifted him to the prisoner ward of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital where he was treated till 28 May after his arrest.
Five prisoners transferred
The four prisoners arrested in the attack and another prisoner were transferred to jails in Chennai, Vellore, Salem, Tiruchi and Cuddalore. Jail sources said a detailed investigation into the incident is under the direction of Jail Superintendent Senthil Kumar. Jail sources claimed that the injuries sustained by Karthi in the attack were not severe.
