Four children, including two sisters, were fatally hit by a van near Vadamadurai in Dindigul district on Sunday (August 30, 2026).
Police said 60-year-old Anjammal of Kanavaimedu near Kollapatti Samathuvapuram was grazing her goats near the national highway. Four children of her relatives were playing nearby on the side of the road. A van carrying milk mowed down the children, who died on the spot. The driver fled the scene due to the problem.
Police identified the children as Yogavarshini, 11, daughter of Nagaraj, and her younger sister Ananya, 6; Dhanusri, 5, daughter of Jagadeesan; and Mosikaran, 6, son of Chinnathambi. Anjammal fainted after the accident and was taken to the primary health centre, police added.
The public nearby alerted the emergency services. With the help of local people, the bodies were sent to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Dindigul.
The Vadamadurai police registered a case, arrested the driver and impounded the vehicle. Investigation indicated that the driver, identified as Saravana Kumar of Kurunthampatti near Ayyalur in the district, was driving the vehicle rashly and carelessly. When the vehicle went out of control, it hit the children. The driver’s confession was recorded, police added.
Further investigation is underway.
