
The foundation stone for a global-standard petting zoo was laid at the Puthur Zoological Park here on Tuesday as part of the park’s expansion project. The ceremony was inaugurated online by spokesperson AN Shamseer, who said the new facility will elevate the zoo to one of the best in the world.
“The visitor-friendly design and thoughtfully created enclosures for animals and birds will make this a unique experience for children and adults alike,” said a spokesperson. He added that studies have shown that human interaction with animals can foster compassion, and expressed hope that a petting zoo would help foster empathy among young visitors.
Forest and Wildlife Minister AK Saseendran, presiding over the function, said Puthur Zoological Park was designed to develop harmony between wildlife, domestic animals and nature. “Using modern technology and sustainable design, we aim to make this park one of the best of its kind in the world,” he said.
Revenue Minister K. Rajan, who is also the local MLA, noted that the construction of the park is now complete. “It is no longer a question of when the project will be completed. From now on, the park will continue to evolve, adapt and create new habitats for each species that joins it,” he said.
Presenting the project report, Special Officer KJ Varghese noted that while the idea behind the Thrissur Zoological Park dates back more than four decades, “it is the last six years of concentrated work that has transformed the concept into this world-class attraction.”
