The CPI(M) and the Congress have condemned the alleged attack on former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar’s convoy in West Tripura’s Bamutia constituency on Sunday (September 27, 2026). Bricks and eggs were thrown at Mr. Sarkar’s vehicle and security escorts.

Both the opposition parties described the incident as a “BJP’s outburst of frustration” as the saffron party is fast losing its support in the state. They also linked the incident to the recent controversies surrounding the Election Commission of India.

The CPI(M) Politburo member did not suffer any injuries, but the car he was traveling in was slightly damaged. The mob that created a ruckus was protesting the arrival of Manik Sarkar in the area to attend a meeting at the party’s local office in Bamutia.

‘BJP disconnected from people’

Reacting, Manik Sarkar said that the BJP is now completely disconnected from the people and is desperate to silence dissenting voices. According to him, the aggressive stance of the saffron party is visible across the country.

CPI(M) and LoP state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury said they were surprised to see some hooligans pelting bricks and eggs despite the presence of numerous security personnel in the area. “I spoke to the DGP in charge who assured me of action but I doubt what the police action would be,” he said.

Congress leader and former health minister Sudip Roy Barman condemned the incident. He said that arm twisting tactics by the BJP will not work to prevent opposition parties from gaining public support.

The CPI(M) held a protest march in Agartala in the evening to protest the attack on the convoy of Manik Sarkar, who held the office of chief minister for four terms. Several hundred supporters of all party wings took part in the protest rally.

Meanwhile, suspected Congress miscreants torched the house of party supporter Samiran Das at Kumarghat in Unakoti district on Sunday. Police said the incident is under investigation.
