Former Raichur MLA Syed Yasin died in a hospital in Bengaluru on Sunday. He was 74.

According to sources, he was admitted to a private hospital where he died of a lingering illness.

He is survived by his wife and four sons.

Mr. Yasin was elected from Raichur Urban Assembly constituency in 1999 and 2008 on a Congress ticket.

He was the son-in-law of former Union Minister Jaffer Sharief and entered politics at his behest.

Family sources confirmed that he will be laid to rest on Monday according to Islamic rites.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar visited Yasin’s residence and paid his last respects. Recalling his association with Syed Yasin, the chief minister said, “I knew him from my student days. We were contemporaries in politics. Because of his work, the Congress gave him a ticket for assembly elections six times.”

MLA NS Boseraju, Shivaraj Patil, Basanagouda Daddal and MLC Vasant Kumar and other leaders paid tributes to Mr. Yasin.
