Former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Mohammad Mustafa and his wife Razia Sultana, a former minister of state, are among the four people named in a formal police inquiry by the Haryana Police into the death of their son.
A case has been registered under sections 103 (1) and 61, which deal with charges of murder and criminal conspiracy.
Akil Akhter, the 35-year-old son of Mustafa and Sultana, died on Thursday in Panchkula, Haryana.

Panchkula police said on Tuesday that Mustafa, Sultana, along with Akhter’s wife and sister, have been named in the police case.
According to Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Srishti Gupta, Akhter, a resident of Sector 4, MDC, Panchkula, was found dead at his residence on October 16.
The family members immediately informed the police and their statements were recorded. Initially, no foul play was suspected and the body was released to the family for its final rites after post-mortem, the DCP said.
Subsequently, a number of social media posts and video clips allegedly taken by the deceased before his death came to light, alluding to personal disputes and expressing concerns for his safety, the Haryana Police said in a statement.
“On October 17, a complaint was received from Shri Shamshuddin of Malerkotl, Punjab, alleging foul play in the incident,” she said.

The DCP noted that in light of the formal complaint and the content of evidence on social media, “a case under Section 103(1), 61 BNS was registered on October 20 at MDC Police Station, Panchkula”.
According to the FIR filed by a man named Shamshuddin, Akhter died under “suspicious circumstances”.
The DCP further added that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been set up under the supervision of an ACP officer. The SIT will conduct a thorough and forensic investigation into all aspects of the matter, she said.
“We reiterate that the investigation will be conducted with an open mind and without any bias and will ensure that no guilty person is spared and no innocent person suffers. Panchkula Police remains committed to promoting transparency and justice in this matter,” a police statement said.
Meanwhile, the complainant, who is seeking an immediate investigation, alleged that there was “burning resentment” between the deceased and his immediate family. The complainant pointed out that the deceased uploaded a video clip on social media in which he made serious allegations regarding family matters. He clearly expressed his fear that his life was in danger, the complainant claimed.
