Former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati launched an AI startup called Thinking Machines Lab on Tuesday, with a team of about 30 key researchers and engineers, including competitors including OpenAI, Meta and Mistral.
The company said in a blog post on Tuesday that the latest players entering the crowded AI startup space hope to build an AI system that aims to encode human values and target a wider range of applications than its competitors.
It shows how long-time Openai executive Murati is able to poach top researchers from her former employer.
About two-thirds of the company’s company are made up of former OpenAI employees, including Barret Zoph, a well-known researcher who left Chatgpt Maker the same day as Murati in late September. Crypto Events will serve as the technical leader of the startup.
Openai co-founder John Schulman is the chief scientist of the startup. Schulman left Openai in August for rival humans, saying he wanted to “focus on AI alignment.”
AI alignment refers to the process of encoding human value into an AI model to make it safer and more reliable, which is the focus of Murati startups.
Sources told Reuters they requested anonymous discussion of private matters.
Reuters reported that the company has been negotiating to raise venture capital from investors.
Murati will think of the CEO of Machine Labs – one of the growing list of former OpenAI executives who have launched AI startups. Two other human and secure superintelligences attracted former Openai researchers and raised billions of dollars in funding.
Thinking Machine Lab says its approach is different from competitors due to the co-design of research and product teams. It says it will facilitate research on AI alignment by sharing code, datasets and model specifications.
“While current systems perform well in programming and mathematics, we are building AI that can adapt to human expertise and implement a wider range of applications,” the startup said.
Murati joined Openai in June 2018, leading the development of Chatgpt and often appeared with CEO Sam Altman as the public face of the company.
Her sudden resignation was one of the company’s series of compelling resignations as it underwent a change in governance structure.
Prior to Openai, she worked at Leap Motion and Tesla in augmented reality startup.
