
Former Kerala Director General of Police (DGP) PJ Alexander died on Friday (May 8, 2026) while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 92. He was under medical care for age-related ailments.
Dr. A 1961-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Alexander lived in Kowdiar and hailed from Kottarakkar. He retired from service in 1994 while serving as Chairman and Managing Director of the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC). He started his professional career as a teacher in the University of Kerala before joining the IPS and joining the Kerala Police.
His first appointment in the police force was as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Kozhikode. He served as Superintendent of Police in Palakkad, Kozhikode and Alappuzha during his distinguished career.
He was promoted as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in 1975 and later held several key administrative and police posts, including Joint Commissioner of Revenue, DIG of Economic Offenses and Security Intelligence. He has also served as managing director of major public sector undertakings, including Travancore Titanium Products, Travancore Cements and Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).
Dr. Alexander became Inspector General (IG) in 1983 and later held important posts such as Crime IG and Director of the Institute of Management in Government (IMG).
Known for his academic excellence in addition to his police career, he earned a doctorate in law enforcement and public order.
In addition to his administrative achievements, he was also an author and wrote four books. He is also credited with recommending major reforms in the functioning of the Kerala Police.
