Former Indian cricketer denied bail in Sri Lanka over match fixing

A Sri Lankan court on Monday denied bail to two Indian nationals, including Jaffna Kings franchise co-owner Manjot Kalra, who were arrested earlier this month in connection with alleged match-fixing.

Kalra and Yuvraj Pushpa, who were remanded from July 17 to July 31, applied to Colombo Chief Magistrate Asang S. Bodaragam for early bail.

Their lawyer, KWS Fernando, applied for bail on the grounds that the two charges are out of order. However, the prosecution countered the objection, saying the investigation by the Sri Lanka Police Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Sports-related Crime was still ongoing.

The magistrate rejected the request for release on bail and thus allowed the detention to continue.

The complaint alleging corruption was filed by Sri Lankan internationals Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Aviska Fernando and Dunith Wellalage. The court was informed that two others

local players also joined the complaint.

The Lanka Premier League, which features five franchises and 24 matches, takes place from July 17 to August 8.
