Former India coach urges team to fix overs issues in Women’s T20 World Cup
Former India head coach WV Raman believes India have the batting depth and spin-bowling power needed to win the Women’s World T20 Cup. However, the former India batsman expressed concern over the team’s power bowling and stressed the need to identify bowlers who can deliver the new ball consistently.
Against Pakistan, India conceded 52 runs in the power bowler, Pakistan’s highest ever score in a power bowler against India in women’s T20Is. Against the Netherlands too, the Indian bowlers soon appeared under pressure. However, in both matches Shree Charani and Deepti Sharma helped India regain control by stalling the opposition batsmen through the middle overs.
“I think this is a very formidable side. The batting is strong. And they have a lot of experience in the spin department. This team has the potential to win the T20 World Cup as well,” Raman told PTI in an interview.
“If there are any areas of concern, it will probably be the ability to pick up wickets in the power play or the fast bowling combination – specifically who will be aiming with the new ball and at the end of the innings,” added Raman.
“HARMANPREET HAS BECOME PATIENT”
Raman also praised captain Harmanpreet Kaur for being more patient and composed, noting that she has evolved from a player who often lost her cool easily.
“Harman has become much more patient over the years. And that’s what experience does to any cricketer. She matures. During my tenure, she was the one who could get upset easily. And she also wore her heart on her sleeve,” added Raman.
India currently top Group A with four points and a net rate of +3.975. They next face Laura Wolvaardt’s South Africa on June 21 at Old Trafford in Manchester, followed by Nigar Sultana Jota’s Bangladesh before closing the group stage against Sophie Molineux’s Australia.
