Senior Congress leader and former Idukki MLA Jose Kuttiyani passed away on Monday. He was 87.

Mr. Kuttiyani was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from Idukki constituency in 1982. After the creation of Idukki district in 1972, he served as the first president of the District Congress Committee (DCC). He also served as a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and an executive member of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). He played a key role in establishing the Idukki District Co-operative Bank.

Due to differences with the party leadership, Mr. Kuttiyani parted ways with the Congress and contested the Idukki parliamentary constituency in 2009 with the support of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). He later joined the Trinamool Congress, serving as its Keralam state president for several years before returning to the Congress in 2022 as an adviser.

He is survived by his wife Rani Jose and children Sam Jose, Manoj Jose, Kshema Santhosh and Paul Jose. The funeral will be held on Tuesday in the church of St. Sebastian, Sibygiri, Muttom.

KPCC president Sunny Joseph condoled and said Mr. Kuttiyani was a pillar of the Congress in Idukki who worked tirelessly as an organizational leader as well as a legislator for the development of the region.
