On Thursday, the forest department successfully radioted two Tuskers who wandered themselves in the Hassan district.
One was captured near Heggadde’s property in Anehalli Hobli of Belur Taluk and the other was captured near Hosmath Estate in Belagod Hobli of Sakleshpur Taluk. They were released after they were equipped with radio collars. With this, the ministry closed an operation that began on 16 March.
Elephant Task Force and Team Rapid Respects have identified the lonely Tuskers that caused difficulty in repairing radio collars. For the last two days, they watched the animal and managed to calm them down by firing the arrows.
Tuskers were released after consolidating radio collars, which would help the forest department watch the animal, and the staff could trace the movement of the whole herd and alert local people to move the herd.
Sourabh Kumar, a representative of the forest conservator in Hassan, said that three elephants captured the ministry in an operation that began on 16 March. Of these, two were moved to elephants’ camps. “He was released in a distant place after repairing the radio collar. On Thursday, the ministry again captured two Tuskers and released them back to the forest after fixing the radio collars,” he said.
The department first used two radio collars developed indigenous. “GSM radio collar collar weighs 7.6 kilograms and the costs were 5.6 GBP Lakh.
The Ministry launched an operation to capture elephants causing problems in Belur and Sakleshpur Taluks of Hassan after the death of four people in the elephants of attacks in the Hassan district. Operation included Officers from the Hassan division, employees of the elephant work group, a team of quick reactions, veterinarians and twisted elephants – Prashantha, Bheem, Kanjan, Harsha, Acolava, Dhananjaya and Mahendra.
