February 17, 2026

The state forest department is all set to introduce coracle rides on Periyar at the Panamkuzhy Ecotourism Center in Palakuzha, Ernakulam. According to officials, this will be the first time such a facility will be launched in the district. The initiative is expected to increase footfall at the ecotourism center and help generate additional revenue.

The facility will be inaugurated by Forest and Wildlife Minister AK Saseendran on Wednesday (February 18, 2026). A total of 10 coracles will be operated on. The ride will cost ₹600 for up to four people and will take 30 minutes. Each coracle holds five people, including a trained oarsman. Tickets will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, rides will not be operated in the afternoon.

Entry is allowed to persons with a height of at least 100 cm. Thirteen rowers were trained and enrolled in the program. At present, the center offers visitors river swimming and views from tree huts.

“With the addition of coracle rides, we expect an increase in tourism, both domestic and foreign. The ecotourism program will also provide livelihood to the local community. Over the past year, we have seen an increase in the number of visitors to the center. Coracle rides will be another attraction,” said R. Delto Marokey, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Kalad Center for Nature Studies.

The ecotourism center receives around 1,500 visitors on weekends, and 200 to 300 visitors on weekdays. “Future expansion will focus on nature education programs, camps and related activities,” he added.
