A six-member committee constituted to investigate the alleged food poisoning at the SRM University in Amaravati took samples of water and food from the institute.
A few days ago, students complained of abdominal pain and vomiting and received treatment at the college pharmacy, while several hostel inmates were admitted to a private hospital. Later, the hostel inmates reportedly staged a protest outside the university, alleging that the food served was of poor quality. They also showed photos of insects in food. The students underwent treatment for five days from November 1, 2025, but the incident came to light only after they staged a dharna outside the college after a few days.
Following complaints of food poisoning at SRM University, Guntur District Collector A. Thameem Ansariya ordered an inquiry. She constituted a committee headed by Tenali Sub-Collector V Sanjan Simha and five others who visited the campus. According to medical records, about 300 students have complained of dizziness, stomach pain and vomiting in recent days. A total of 6,000 students were taking food at the hostel, Ms. Sanjana told the media.
“We are ascertaining the sources of water for the university, hygiene in the kitchen and canteen, ingredients used for food preparation and recording the statements of the students,” said the sub-collector.
“Samples of water and food ingredients have been collected and sent to the State Food Laboratory located in Nacharam, Telangana. A detailed investigation into the food poisoning incident is underway,” she said.
Speaking to The Hindu on Sunday (November 9, 2025), Guntur District Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal said police officers visited SRM University following the incident and protest by students. The situation is under control in the campus, the SP said. The university management declared a holiday and sent students home.
Correct behavior
Andhra Pradesh Technical and Professional Institutions Employees Association (APTPIEA) state president Brahmananda Reddy said in a statement on Sunday that it was unfortunate that the institution failed to provide quality food, a basic need of students on campus.
He said HRD Minister Nara Lokesh and officials of the Food Safety Department should conduct a thorough inspection and ensure that such incidents do not recur. The university management should ensure that the supervising staff and the supplier responsible for serving the expired food are taken into their hands and the affected students are given proper medical attention, he added.
