
The Uttar Pradesh Congress on Saturday (April 4, 2026) organized a seminar ahead of the birth anniversary of former Deputy Chief Minister Jagjivan Ram in Lucknow, whose leaders highlighted the efforts of the late leader and the Congress party to ensure justice for the downtrodden and underprivileged. Jagjivan Ram’s daughter and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar addressed the gathering as the chief guest. During the event, UP Congress also felicitated current and former Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) belonging to Scheduled Castes as well as individuals from Scheduled Castes who have done exemplary work in social services.
“His primary focus was his involvement in the freedom struggle, his role in Dalit leadership and inciting patriotism in the hearts of the deprived and Dalits. As the country’s agriculture minister, he promoted the Green Revolution, a plan to eradicate hunger in India, and emphasized the adoption of improved seeds, chemical fertilizers and modern farming techniques to increase grain production under the Hetrod, which led to a significant reduction in grain production in the Congress.” and the underprivileged,” Ms. Kumar said, adding that untouchability and discrimination weave like vines around the tree of society, constantly weakening it and urging people to rise above it and focus on the development of the country.

Mr. Rai added that the Congress is the only party in the country that works for the downtrodden and fights for an inclusive, pluralist idea of India. The seminar on Jagjivan Ram and his contribution is seen as another effort by the Congress to reach out to the Dalit population in a state that is going to polls early next year with leaders emphasizing Dalit leadership in the Congress era.
