New instructions
Directing field staff to actively work with farmers to ensure adoption of best practices, he said farmers should provide clean water round the clock and establish community water troughs.
Fodder should be cut and fed in cooler hours with mineral supplements of 30-50 grams to support digestion and immunity, he said, adding that animals must be grazed only in the morning and evening and kept in cool, ventilated sheds.
Dr. Naidu stated that early morning milking reduces stress and improves performance, and said Dr. Naidu sheds should be oriented east-west, with roofs sprinkled with water, while crossbred cattle are equipped with fans and sprinklers.
Symptoms of heat stress include rapid breathing, salivation and loss of appetite. After that, farmers should immediately cool the animals down and consult with veterinarians, the report said. Transport must be limited to cooler hours, with feeding every six hours, according to the statement.
The director urged outreach programs and regular visits to ensure readiness over the summer. He also encouraged the use of mobile veterinary services in an emergency and recommended hanging wet gunny bags around the shed to create cooling effects.
According to the statement, these measures can strengthen coordination with rural water supply agencies and voluntary organizations.
