By the end of 2025-26, electrification in Mysuru Railway, as part of a larger electrification ride by Indian railways to increase energy efficiency, reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, and support sustainable environmental transport.
The Mysuru Division has a route length of 1,722 km, of which 1,621 km of the track was electrified, which represents 94.13% of the total route throughout the division.
The length of the track in the GHAT part is 55 km, from which the electrification was completed on the section 23.13 km. About 32 km the section between Amaravathi and Kuttur is waiting for completion and work orders were issued and will be completed by the end of 2026, according to Ravishankar, head of the Electrical Engineer (Traction), Divisional Railway Mysuru.
He said that the current electrification unit is part of the national objective to achieve 100% electrification and a reduction in carbon tracks. In the Mysur division, the savings were collected due to huge electrification and are environmentally important to reduce carbon footprint and increase operational efficiency, said Mr. Ravishankar.
Referring to the GHAT section, he said there were special challenges when moving men and material to a place in the absence of access. In addition, the terrain is rough and becomes inaccessible during the monsoon, but there are steps to overcome these challenges, Mr. Ravishankar added.
Given the short section of the electrification of the track, which remained near Mysur Airport due to technical problems, Mr. Ravishankar said it was discussed at the highest level between the Railway Council and the CEO of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
“We have suggested alternatives and solutions, including providing a shield to remove any electromagnetic disorders that could affect the aircraft navigation equipment,” Ravishankar said.
The Mysurur-Nanjangudský section was almost 60 km electrified, but for a 1.5 km gap at Mysuru Airport. The railway railway line and DGCA and the Indian airport office did not allow permission because the electrification using a triple system can cause disruption of flight navigation equipment and endanger flight safety.
