‘Flying bus’ could be India’s next public transport innovation, says Nitin Gadkari | Video | Today’s news

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said the government plans to introduce the ‘flying bus’ as part of its broader drive for futuristic and sustainable transport solutions in India.

At an event in Lucknow on Monday, the minister outlined the hub’s vision to transform urban mobility by incorporating new technologies aimed at easing congestion and improving connectivity.

“Now I will bring a bus that will fly in the air,” Gadkari said while discussing the government’s plans to modernize India’s transport ecosystem.

While the minister did not share a timeline or technical details of the proposed project, the announcement comes as the government continues to focus on alternative mobility solutions and cleaner modes of transport.

Part of the next generation mobility effort

Over the past few years, the government has promoted electric vehicles, alternative fuels, ropeways, cable cars and urban aerial mobility as part of its strategy to reduce pollution and improve transport infrastructure.

Gadkari has previously advocated the adoption of new technologies such as electric aircraft, drones and other low-emission transport systems to reshape India’s long-term mobility landscape.

If developed, flying buses could represent a major shift in urban transportation, especially in densely populated cities where traffic congestion remains a perennial problem.

However, commercial deployment of such vehicles would depend on advances in aviation technology, safety regulations, air traffic control systems and supporting infrastructure.

The Minister’s remarks complement the Government’s wider infrastructure agenda, which aims to combine technological innovation with transport expansion to deliver faster, cleaner and more efficient mobility solutions.

Gadkari is preventing the introduction of E20 petrol

The minister also addressed criticism regarding the introduction of E20 petrol, or fuel blended with 20 per cent ethanol, rejecting claims that it adversely affects vehicle performance.

Addressing the Viksit Bharat conclave last week, Gadkari said India spends almost 22 lakh crore annually on fuel imports, making the transition to alternative fuels both an economic and an environmental priority.

“There is no case where any car has faced problems due to E20 petrol. Has there been any car in the country that has faced problems due to the use of E20 petrol? Just name one,” he said, according to a PTI report.

He further claimed that misinformation is being spread about ethanol fuel.

“…false narratives are being spread about the introduction of gasoline with higher ethanol content. These are paid campaigns,” he said.

India has already achieved 20 percent ethanol blending in gasoline using ethanol derived from biomass such as sugarcane, corn and rice to reduce dependence on oil imports and reduce carbon emissions.

Gadkari also said that he personally uses several alternative fuel vehicles and urged people to experience the technology for themselves, news agency ANI reported.
