FlyDubai incident: Israeli plumber says TV show taught him how to stabilize plane; where to watch the show on OTT? | Today’s news
The FlyDubai incident involving a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv continues to be in the news as an investigation is currently underway. As Indian Captain Smit Machchhar is being praised by world leaders and Indians across the country, attention has also been gained by several passengers who have joined in to take control of the flight after the alleged attack.
Meet the traveler hero
The passenger, identified as Yaniv Hayun, 50, is being hailed as a hero. He and three other Israeli passengers managed to subdue the co-pilot who allegedly stabbed the captain in the reported attempt to crash the flight. FlyDubai flight FZ1073 was carrying more than 170 people on Wednesday when the incident occurred.
The confrontation in the cockpit triggered a steep descent, causing the plane to drop about 16,000 feet in the two minutes before the hijack distress signal was transmitted.
How the flight was stabilized
After the incident, Hayun said he knew how to stabilize the plane with a nose dive. He added that he learned this from an air show about a plane crash, Reuters reported.
He reportedly managed to pull the steering wheel and, with the help of the other aircrew on board, landed safely in Saudi Arabia.
According to Reuters, Hayun was traveling with his wife and two daughters. It owns a wastewater pumping company, the press agency added.
After arriving from Saudi Arabia at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport, Hayun revealed what happened on the fateful flight.
“We knew there was an attack because the woman screamed ‘stab’ and the plane shook,” he said, adding: “At that point I ran to the cockpit and the plane dived.”
He met and hugged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He said the stabbed Indian pilot managed to open the cockpit door before collapsing.
“One (pilot) was down and one was at the controls and another person came in with me and I grabbed the attacker and put him in a chokehold and pulled him out,” he told Netanyahu, as seen in a video shared by the prime minister’s office.
Which TV show saved the fall of FlyDubai
When asked how he knew what to do in the moments before the next pilot was on board, Hayun replied, “I’m watching Air Crash Investigation.”
Air Crash Investigation or Mayday is a documentary television series that focuses on real air crashes using real interviews, cockpit data, eyewitnesses, expert testimony and investigative findings.
