The growing flood water in Kollidam began to flood the low -lying villages along its banks in the Mayiladuuthrai district, which was influenced by both the agricultural area and the residential areas.
This is followed by authorities releasing more than 1 lakh Cusecs of excess water from the muccomb in the last few days. This water flows through Kallanai to Kollidam before it is released into the Bay of Bengal near Pazhayar, near Srkazhi.
In the collides block were the villages of Nathalpad, Muthalaimed and Vellamanal partially surrounded by water, with several households experiencing different degrees of impact.
Crops grown along the riverbed – especially bananas, tapiocas, brinjal and women’s fingers – were immersed and increased concerns between farmers. Many fear that the continuing release of water from the dam can worsen the situation in the coming days.
The district authorities stated that they carefully monitored the situation and advised the residents in areas susceptible to the flood to remain vigilant.
