Flash floods in Nepal: Still no contact for 320 Indians; 400 stuck

At least 320 Indians remain “uncontactable” following devastating flash floods in Nepal, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday (28 Aug 2026).

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday (August 28, 2026) received 21 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu who were rescued from disaster-hit areas of Nepal. The minister said that in a conversation with his Nepali counterpart Shisir Khanal earlier in the day, he promised more help in disaster relief.

The third Indian-assisted flight reached Kathmandu on Friday (August 28, 2026) night. “Relief supplies and an 11-member medical and tunnel rescue team are now on the ground,” Mr Jaishankar wrote on X.

“The relief supplies have been handed over to Mr. Mahabir Pun, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Nepal,” said External Affairs Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal.

“A third flight carrying 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid has departed for Kathmandu. The aid includes portable generators, dignity kits, food packs and water purification tablets. An 11-member team of doctors, rescuers and a survey team for tunnel rescue operations are also on board. India continues to support Nepal’s earlier relief and rescue efforts,” Mr XX said.

“In addition, we have also offered Bailey bridges along with their associated technical teams to quickly restore connectivity in the affected parts of Nepal. One Bailey bridge is already in Nepal and can be deployed for relief work,” Mr Jaiswal said on Friday (August 28, 2026), announcing that the Indian government was making arrangements to return after floods left the Indus stranded on 26. Around 320 Indians remain “uncontactable”.

Mr. Jaiswal further said that India has made a “specific offer” to the Nepalese authorities to send NDRF teams along with their associated equipment that can help in the ongoing search and rescue operations. “We are awaiting a response from the Nepalese government in this area. We are ready to offer any additional assistance that the Nepalese authorities may require,” he said.

Official sources said that 149 Indian nationals crossed over from China to Nepal on Friday (August 28, 2026).
