Five youths arrested for allegedly stalking and assaulting a woman in Kochi

The Muvattupuzha police arrested five youths for allegedly assaulting a woman and attempting to outrage her modesty late on Sunday night.

The arrested have been identified as Ajith School, 19, Advaith Suni, 20, Tomy Shaji, 19, Arjun Sanil, 20, and Ashwin Raghu, 20, all natives of Marada near Muvattupuzha. They were allegedly in a drunken state.

According to the police, the woman was attacked when she was walking towards the Muvattupuzha KSRTC bus stand to catch the bus home. The youths, who arrived on two motorbikes, were said to be following her and approaching her with malicious intent.

Police said though the woman tried to run away, the accused tried to run her down on their motorcycles. She managed to escape by getting into a passing truck with the help of a biker who stopped after noticing her plight. The man also got into the truck after he failed to start the motorcycle. The accused then allegedly chased the truck for almost 15 km. On board the vehicle, the woman called the Muvattupuzha police, who alerted the night patrol teams in the area. The defendant abandoned the pursuit after spotting the police jeep.

The five were arrested by an investigation team led by Muvattupuzha Inspector Anil George. They were brought to court and taken into custody.
