Guntur police have arrested five persons and are looking for a vernacular television journalist for allegedly conspiring to implicate a police officer on false charges.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Vakul Jindal told reporters on Thursday that BRK News Channel reporter Kanneganti Arun Babu hatched a plan to implicate Circle Inspector (CI) Matangi Srinivasa Rao after he refused to pay him money.
According to the police, Arun Babu staged the incident by hiring a group to damage the rear-view mirror of his car on November 4 at Krishna Nagar in Guntur and then filed a false complaint claiming that a police officer was behind the act. On his instructions, associates Bade Jagadish, Meda Sampath Kumar, Velisetty Adarsh Babu, Sai and Prasanna Reddy carried out the vandalism while another associate recorded the act on video.
Based on evidence from CCTV footage and call records, the police have arrested Jagadish, Sampath Kumar, Adarsh Babu, Sai and Prasanna Reddy while they are trying to nab the remaining accused.
SP Vakul Jindal said the main accused Arun Babu is facing several previous cases in Guntur and Palnadu districts. Some of the other accused involved in the case also have criminal records.
Meanwhile, the Information and Public Relations (I&PR) authorities in Guntur district told The Hindu that Arun Babu had been with Andhra Prabha Telugu on a daily basis sometime in the past, from where he got access to the government-recognised accreditation card. I&PR authorities also confirmed that his accreditation was revoked almost a year ago as he was facing some charges at that time. He later joined BRK Channel, according to information provided by the police.
