Thousands of fishing families were eagerly waiting for the planned tour of the main Minister N. Chandrababa Naida on Budagatlapal of Etcherl Mandal of Srikakula District (26 April 2025). Hundreds of fishermen migrated to Gujarat, Maharaštra, Tamil Nadu and other places in search of livelihood due to limited opportunities in Sricacula, which has 180 km long coastline from Pydibhimavaram to Ichchapuram, border town Andhra Pradesh.
With the increase in the cost of boats, nets and diesel, many families stopped fishing activity. With the competition from mechanized ships, changes in the environment are not able to capture enough fish even after spending three or four days in the sea. Approximately 50,000 families, which depend completely on fishing activities, face problems in the period of fishing, which would be strictly implemented every year for almost 45 days between April and June.
The previous YSRCP government used 10,000 financial assistance within Matsyakary Bharosa to sanction. It has now been increased to 20,000 GBP. The Minister of Agriculture K. Atchannaid said that approximately 258 Crore would be credited to the accounts of eligible families within the system during the main minister.
Several leaders of fishermen’s communities are expected to meet the main minister and present their complaints. The head of the Suryanarayana Fishermen Association hoped that the government would provide alternative livelihood opportunities with a decrease in fishing by water contamination, as several pharmaceutical companies left polluted water directly to the sea in Pydibhimavaram and other places.
