The sudden strike, which swept the Mallipattinam fishing port on Friday, damaged over 10 mechanized ships, one ship was immersed. Then the fishermen repeated their long -waiting demand for the construction of Groyne to protect the anchored ships from such unfavorable weather events.
On Friday, fishing was stopped due to a planned holiday and all ships were anchored in the port. Around 21 o’clock strong winds of the coast threw the coast, resulting in anchoring ships collided against each other, resulting in structural damage.
Fishermen threw themselves into the harbor and tried to save their vessels to prevent further losses. The wind continued until 23:00, after which the weather returned to normal. One ship owned by a fisherman named Sarbudheen has been immersed. The following morning, damaged vessels were brought to the shore for repairs and a crane deployed to obtain a sunken ship.
Thaiudeen A., Secretary General Tamil Nadu Meenavar Peravai, said the absence of Groyne’s structure left the harbor vulnerable. “The officials have looked at several times, but the measures were not taken. Mallippattinam had over 250 ships before Cyclone Gaja. It remains less than 100 for the massive damage that was caused during this cyclone because of the lack of Groyne,” he said.
“In the past, we have never received compensation for such damage related to the weather. This time we require relief to be expanded within the National Fund for Catastrophe management. The forfeited ship is worth 4 lakh and repairs of other damaged ships would cost another 5 Lakh. said S. Habeeb Muhammad, President of the Association of Owners of Mechanized Ships.
The official from the fishing department confirmed that a detailed assessment of the ground level was completed and the report was submitted to the State Government for assessment.
