Four students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in Gurla were hospitalized on Tuesday after suffering respiratory problems due to smoke inhalation from a fire in the hostel premises. The fire started as a result of a short circuit and all the cots in the dormitory area were burnt.
The smoke caused suffocation and tension between the children. As many as five children who had breathing problems were admitted to the Nellimarla Primary Health Center where their condition is said to be stable. Collector S. Ramsundar Reddy said medical teams from Vizianagaram have also been sent to the PHC to help treat the students. He further added that education department officials have been directed to investigate the incident and submit a detailed report within a few days.
