A first information report was registered on Wednesday (Oct 15, 2025) in connection with the alleged suicide of Assistant Sub-Inspector Sandeep Lather on Tuesday, accusing the late IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar and his family of corruption, officials said. The case was registered hours after Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini met the family in Ladhot village during the day and assured them justice and all possible help.
After registering the case, the family gave their consent for the post-mortem and agreed to perform the last rites of the deceased policeman on Thursday afternoon in his hometown Julana. The body was taken to PGIMS, Rohtak, late in the evening for a post-mortem examination, which is likely to be conducted by a medical board on Thursday morning.
Posted in the Rohtak Police Cyber Cell, Lather ended his life after leveling allegations of corruption against Puran and his family in a four-page note and video. He is survived by his wife and three children, including two daughters.
IPS officer Puran, who was serving as Inspector General of Police Training Center in Rohtak’s Sunaria, killed himself on October 7 at his residence in Chandigarh.
A Rohtak police spokesperson confirmed the registration of the FIR but declined to comment on its contents. However, a source privy to the discussions with the deceased policeman’s family claimed that four persons, including the late IPS officer’s wife and senior IAS officer Amneet. P. Kumar, his brother-in-law and Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amit Amit Rattan and Puran’s personal security officer (PSO) Sushil Kumar, already in jail in an extortion case, were named in the case. Lather’s wife is the complainant.
The source said the government had also agreed to demands for martyrdom status for the deceased and government jobs for the next of kin. However, Lather’s cousin Sanjay refused to comment.
Earlier, Mr. Saini visited the family in the village and offered condolences. “Today (Wednesday), after reaching Ladhot (Rohtak), I met the family members of late ASI Sandeep Lather ji and shared their grief. I pray to God to give peace to the departed soul and give the family strength to bear this pain at this difficult time. In this hour of grief, I assured the bereaved family of trust in the official “X” assured the family of trust in the official Mr. Saini’s “X”.
Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda also reached Ladhota to express his condolences and demanded a thorough investigation into the entire episode involving two suicide cases in Haryana. “The government should conduct this investigation under the supervision of a Supreme Court judge so that the guilty are not spared and innocent people are not implicated,” he said. Lok Dal Indian National President Abhay Chautala also visited the village to pay his respects to the departed soul.
Apart from political leaders, a large number of local residents from nearby villages also turned up to pay their last respects to the police officer. Rajesh Dahiya, a resident of Nigana village, said he had known Mr Lather for more than a decade and found him an “honest” and “helpful” police officer. “He made the ultimate sacrifice by laying down his life for the cause of truth and justice,” Mr Dahiya said.
