The Central Division Cybercrime Police has registered an FIR against several social media users for allegedly promoting obscene videos that have gone viral on social media platforms.
Based on a complaint filed by a social media user, the police charged the accused under various sections of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and launched an investigation into 28 links where the accused posted clips and screenshots of obscene videos on their social media accounts.
The accused allegedly invited users to comment or send direct messages to access the full videos, and also uploaded links to their bios. They allegedly used platforms like Instagram, Facebook and YouTube to post and promote such content.
The links shared by the accused allegedly redirected users directly to obscene websites. Police said such posts were attracting people to pornographic content, which was a serious concern as people of all ages were using the social media.
Officials noted that some users click on these links out of curiosity, resulting in children and others being exposed to obscene sites. Since this is a serious social issue, a private complaint was lodged on the basis of which an FIR was registered.
The case was registered at the Central Police Station against cybercrime. Police have booked 28 social media accounts and launched an investigation.
According to the police, media users engage in illegal activities just to promote their account and increase their followers. “It is a dangerous trend leading to immoral activities that attract strict action,” said a police officer.
