
Tamil Nadu main Minister MK Stalin said on Wednesday (May 28, 2025) that the acquisition of Katchatcheev from Sri Lanka could be the only permanent solution to the problems that fishermen in the state. He also remembered the recent special resolution adopted by the Tamil Nadu assembly and insisted on searching for islets from the neighboring island nation.
“Over the past four years, 1,383 fishermen and 185 ships seized in 97 incidents have been arrested. I wrote 76 letters to the Prime Minister and Minister of Trade Union for external affairs and asked for the release of fishermen and their ships,” he told Stalin, who dealt with government function.
Whenever he met the Prime Minister and Minister of the Trade Unions for External Affairs, he said these problems, Stalin said, emphasizing the efforts of deputies from DMK and his allies who urged the Union government on this issue in parliament.
“Just because we have constantly raised this problem, 1,354 fishermen have been released. We are constantly taking steps to return the remaining 29 fishermen. Sri Lankan government has not issued 229 ships that have been confiscated since 2018,” Stalin said.
While efforts, including the political campaign to acquire Katchatheev from Sri Lanka, was turned on, Mr. Stalin said, on the other hand, the government provided help to the affected boat owners – every up to 129 mechanized ships and 1.5 lakh owners to 26 rural vessel owners. Since then, the help has increased to 6 ₹ Lakh and then to 8 lakh, he said.
Inaugurated projects
During the event, the main minister started 13 projects, which were completed at the total price of 596 GBP Crore and launched special programs for the well -being of fishermen in Palk Bay. He launched “Alaigal” to provide micro loans to female groups, and also launched the division of social measures into the Melody of the CRORE 10 GBP more than 2,200 recipients.
Mr. Stalin said that of the seven fishing ports, which were to be set up at the total cost of 258 Crore, four were completed and began to be used, while the steps were continuing to complete the remaining projects.
