Built in 1864, the iconic Eden Gardens is the oldest cricket stadium in India. Nestled in the heart of Calcutta, it has seen the sport evolve from the white man’s colonial era to the nightly, floodlit spectacle of modern day spectacle without ever losing its soul.
Often called the “Mecca of Indian Cricket”, Eden Gardens is defined by its crowd. Few places in the world can match the noise, passion and sheer theater that erupts when the stands are filled. A single boundary can set off a roar that rolls across the Hooghly, while a collapse can send 60,000 people into stunned silence. The crowd at Eden is known to live every ball.
The stadium’s history is littered with iconic moments. From VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid’s epic turn against Australia in 2001 to Rohit Sharma’s epic 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014, Eden has seen moments that few have.
Eden was expected to host Bangladesh among the other teams in the tournament, but plans changed at the last minute as the side refused to travel to India due to security concerns.
