The UAE recorded their first victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup T20 when they defeated Canada by five wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Friday, February 13. Asked to chase a target of 151, UAE reached home in 19.4 overs thanks to some brilliant knocks from Aryansh Sharma (74* off 53) and Sohaib Khan (51 off 29).
The Muhammad Waseem-led side made a terrific start to the chase when their skipper was bowled midway through the third over for 4 (8). UAE scored just 22 runs in the first five overs before Aryansh Sharma took on Jaskaran Singh in the final over and smashed him for 17 runs to shift the momentum. While Aryansh continued to build his innings, wickets tumbled at the other end with Alishan Sharafu (5 off 13), Mayank Kumar (4 off 6) and Harshit Kaushik (5 off 9) falling to Saad Bin Zafar (3/14).
UAE registered second win in T20 World Cup history
With Sohaib Khan joining Aryansh Sharma at the crease, UAE were 66/4 in 12.3 overs and the duo put together a game-changing stand for the fifth wicket. The pair were involved in a massive 84-run stand off just 42 balls, putting UAE on the brink of victory as they needed one run to win in the last three deliveries after Khan’s dismissal. Jaskaran scored the winning runs for his team to lead the UAE to only their second win in T20 World Cup history after their win over Namibia in Geelong in 2022.
Earlier, after opting to bat first, Canada were reeling at 150/7 in their 20 overs with Harsh Thaker holding the innings together with a good half-century (50 off 41). Junaid Siddique troubled Canada throughout their innings as he claimed a five-wicket haul (5/35 in 4 overs) as he first rocked them with the new ball and later applied pressure at the death to restrict them. The right-arm seamer was adjudged the player of the match for registering career-best figures to lead his team to a historic victory.
