NEW DELHI: Iran’s football team has once again won praise for a touching off-field gesture after their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group G match against Egypt in Seattle.After a 1-1 draw that helped Egypt qualify for the knockout stage for the first time in history, Iran’s players left a handwritten note in the dressing room thanking the hosts and highlighting the values โ€‹โ€‹of fair play and sportsmanship.

The report shared by Tasnim News Agency on X focused on respect, honor and the true spirit of football.“We come from Iran… A country that has valued honor over victory for thousands of years. For us, football is more than a competition for results; it is a test of character. Maybe points can be won in many ways, but respect is not. Maybe a team can advance from a group, but only through fairness and honor can one stand before history. Fair play is not just a line in football rules and a hospital. Thank you all for the game Seattle, Irana, hospital.” they gave their hearts, their voices and their whole being for Iran, always standing tall,โ€ the note read.

It was the second time during the tournament that Iran left a heartfelt message in the dressing room.After a goalless draw against Belgium at SoFi Stadium, the team thanked Los Angeles for its hospitality and reflected on their journey.“From ancient Persia thousands of years ago to the civilized Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and unwavering,” read a handwritten note released by the Iran Football Federation.“Thank you Los Angeles for your hospitality. We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honor and left with dignity,” he concluded.

Egypt makes history

On the field, Egypt secured a historic place in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup with a 1-1 draw.Mahmoud Saber gave Egypt an early lead after goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand parried Mohamed Salah’s effort.Iran had a chance to equalize from the penalty spot, but Mehdi Taremi’s spot-kick was saved by Mostafa Shobeir before Ramin Rezaeian eventually leveled the scores. Rezaeian’s performance earned him the Man of the Match award.Iran thought they had found a dramatic winner in stoppage time, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. Shobeir then made another important save to preserve the tie and send Egypt into the knockout stages.
