‘FIFA no longer hiding’: Fans erupt as all-Argentine refereeing team named for France-Morocco quarter-final clash
FIFA’s decision to name the full Argentina national team for France’s 2026 World Cup quarter-final against Morocco has sparked debate among fans / Image: AP, X FIFA has confirmed the match officials for France’s 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Morocco, with the appointment attracting immediate attention after the governing body selected the entire team of on-field referees from Argentina. The quarter-final in Boston will become the first match at the tournament to feature all five on-field officials from the same country, a decision that has sparked widespread debate among supporters despite FIFA following the appointment pattern used throughout the competition. The heavyweight quarter-final, a rematch of the 2022 World Cup semi-final, is scheduled for July 10 at the Boston Stadium, kicking off at 1:30 IST, with the winners moving one step closer to the World Cup final.
FIFA confirmed the complete Argentina national team
FIFA announced on Tuesday that Argentine referee Facundo Tello will take charge of the quarter-final between France and Morocco. He will be assisted by fellow Argentines Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, while Darío Herrera has been appointed as the fourth official and Christian Navarro will act as reserve assistant referee. The complete representative team on the field is:
- Referee: Facundo Tello (Argentina)
- assistant referee 1: Juan Pablo Belatti (Argentina)
- assistant referee 2: Gabriel Chad (Argentina)
- Fourth official: Dario Herrera (Argentina)
- Substitute Assistant Referee: Christian Navarro (Argentina)
The appointment of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) had not yet been confirmed when FIFA released the referees. The appointment means that every official on the pitch for the match will be from Argentina, the first such case during the 2026 World Cup.
Historic appointments follow FIFA’s existing approach
Although supporters were quick to question FIFA’s decision, the governing body consistently appointed referees and assistant referees from the same country throughout the tournament. England’s dramatic 3-2 round of 16 victory over Mexico, for example, was officiated by a trio of Australian referees, while officials from Morocco served as the fourth official and substitute assistant referee. Argentina’s similarly dramatic 3–2 comeback win over Egypt in the Round of 16 was overseen by French referee François Letexier along with two French assistant referees, with two other French officials also involved in the VAR operation. FIFA made the appointment of France against Morocco on Monday, ahead of Argentina’s victory over Egypt, meaning the selection was finalized before the latest controversy involving French officials emerged.
Fans are questioning FIFA’s decision amid recent refereeing disputes
Despite the established naming scheme, the decision to assign an all-Argentine on-field crew for the France match sparked immediate reaction on social media, particularly given the ongoing rivalry between France and Argentina after the 2022 World Cup finals. One supporter wrote: “All Argentinian referees for the France match, FIFA is trying to rig the World Cup for Argentina in every possible way.” Another wrote: “FIFA isn’t hiding it anymore. All Argentinian why don’t you bring Messi to check VAR too.” A third commented: “FIFA is such a pathetic and corrupt organization.” Another fan added: “Damn cheaters. That’s clearly the intention.” However, these criticisms overlook the fact that France also benefited from having a French refereeing team involved in Argentina’s round of 16 victory over Egypt. The match became controversial after Egypt had a second goal disallowed by VAR and later scored again, while Mohamed Salah was also denied a late penalty appeal shortly before Enzo Fernández scored Argentina’s stoppage-time winner. Egyptian striker Mostafa Zico criticized the officiating afterwards, telling reporters: “The referee was not good. He was unfair. His unfairness was clear. He was chasing us from the start of the match. He doesn’t want us to win.”
The quarterfinals revive the 2022 semifinal rivalry
Apart from the official discussion, the light fixture itself has a significant history. France beat Morocco 2-0 in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup before eventually losing to Argentina on penalties in one of the most memorable finals in the tournament’s history. This year’s meeting comes after France edged Paraguay 1-0 in a physical and ill-tempered last-16 tie in which Kylian Mbappé was repeatedly targeted, while Morocco progressed after beating the Netherlands on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Attention also turned to who could manage the World Cup final. FIFA traditionally waits until the finalists are confirmed before selecting a referee, as officials cannot oversee matches involving their own countries. The main candidates include Poland’s Szymon Marciniak, who officiated the 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France, and Dutch referee Danny Makkelie after the Netherlands were eliminated earlier in the tournament. Another possibility is Brazilian Raphael Claus, one of the 12 CONMEBOL referees at the tournament. Claus had already found himself at the center of a World Cup controversy after sending off United States forward Folarin Balogun against Bosnia and Herzegovina before FIFA later suspended the resulting one-match ban under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The decision sparked criticism in the soccer world after United States President Donald Trump publicly lobbied FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review the incident before Balogun was cleared to play against Belgium. The United States eventually exited the tournament after a 4-1 defeat.
