A team of women journalists met Telangana State Commission for Women Chairperson Nerella Sharada and complained about the online abuse, threats and obscene posts they are often subjected to.
The team played several video clips to the chairman to drive home the enormity of the problem and shared details of the constant trolling, harassment and online attacks against typists from certain social media.
Journalists alleged that the online harassment was systematic with the subjects involved deliberately making obscene remarks, threatening life and sharing derogatory posts and videos. The aim of such trolling seems to be to stop the professional work of journalists. The same team also widely hosts hateful and communal content on its accounts, the team reported.
Journalists including independent content generators – Thulasi Chandu, C. Vanaja and Y. Krishna Jyothi termed the harassment as an attack on media freedom and self-esteem of women journalists and sought to investigate the matter and take action against the handlers and those involved.
Earlier, they met Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar and represented him in the same matter.
