A Bengaluru-based Flipkart employee pointed out that the last weeks of December often take on the feel of an informal winter break in many Indian workplaces, even when no official holidays are announced. Her post on social media resonated with professionals who are experiencing a similar slowdown across offices at the end of the year.
Simrann M Bhambani, Assistant Brand Manager (Marketing) at Flipkart shared her experience in an Instagram video shot at the Bengaluru airport while traveling home ahead of the holiday season. In the clip, she talked about how the work culture changes around the winter, especially after December 20, when several employees begin to decide to work from home or start taking their remaining annual leave.

“I’m at the Bengaluru airport because I’m going home. And the nice thing about Flipkart is that we have a bit of a low-key winter break during the winter when people start working from home or taking their annual leave after the 20th,” she said in the video.

While companies may not formally declare a winter break, the period between Christmas and New Year often sees reduced office traffic, fewer face-to-face meetings, and more flexibility in work schedules. Bhambani’s video highlighted this unspoken understanding that allows employees to balance work with travel plans and family time.

‘Feels Like School Holidays’
Bhambani added that she decided to travel earlier than usual because plane tickets tend to be more expensive closer to the holidays. She also said the experience reminded her of winter vacations as a child. “I feel like I’m a kid again heading home for winter break,” she said.
At the same time, she quickly specified that work does not stop during this period. “Of course we’re still working. It’s not like taking breaks from work, but we have the flexibility of working from home,” she explained, emphasizing that employees stay connected and productive even when they’re out of the office.
The video ended on a light note, with Bhambani saying she would see her colleagues “next year in office”, referring to returning to normal office routines after the holiday season. She captioned the post: “Can’t wait to be home.”
Her clip hit the internet and reflects the wider reality for many professionals in India, where December brings a quieter work environment, flexible schedules and the ability to travel home – making the end of the year, at least briefly, like a return to the school holidays.
