FC Barcelona officially retreated from the race to sign Spain International Nico Williams. Club president Joan Laporta confirmed that while the wings were on the club radar last summer, Catalan giants are now exploring alternative opportunities on the transmission market.
Williams, who appeared as one of the brightest young wings of Europe after his performances for the Athletic Club I Spanish national team in its triumph Euro 2024, He was strongly associated with moving to Camp Nou. Its impressive appearance raised interest from Barcelona, but the 22-year-old eventually undertook his future by Bilba by signing the extension of the contract and closed the door to the chances of connecting with his teammate Lamine Yamal.
“We appreciated Nico as a potential signature last summer with Dani Olmo, but right now I think the club appreciates other players,” said Laporta TV3.
Barcelona’s attitude signals a shift in its transmission strategy because it seeks to transform their team before the 2025-26 season after winning Laliga, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup titles this season. While previously they considered Williams, among other things, the club, the club has since moved from the idea of chasing him this summer.
This development opens the doors for the Premier League Arsenal and Chelsea clubs, both of whom allegedly identified Williams as the highest goal. The direct style of playing and the consistency of the wing in the La League continues to make it a hot view on the European market.
Although Barcelona is no longer in the picture, Williams remains one of the most interesting names heading to the summer window.
