Tragic Accident off the Coast of Chile: Father Films Video of Whale Swallowing Kayaker Son
In a shocking and heart-wrenching incident, a father’s worst nightmare came to life off the coast of Chile, where a humpback whale swallowed his 15-year-old son while the father was filming the kayaking trip on camera.
The harrowing footage, captured on a GoPro camera mounted on the father’s kayak, shows the whale breaching the surface of the water, its massive body then opening its jaws and snatching the young kayaker.
The video, which has been widely circulated online, shows the father, identified as 38-year-old Eduardo Vera, paddling his kayak alongside his son, Santiago, as they explored the calm waters of the Gulf of San Jorge. The camera captures the exact moment the whale, estimated to be around 50 feet long, rises out of the water and engulfs the kayak.
"I was recording his smiling face, and then…I just lost him," Eduardo Vera said in an emotional interview with local media, still attempting to process the shocking incident. "It all happened so quickly. I was so focused on capturing the moment, and then…he was gone."
The tragic event took place on Saturday afternoon, reportedly around 2:30 pm local time, when the pair were kayaking in an area known for its whale sightings. Although the sea conditions were calm, the family had inquired about whale activity in the area beforehand and were warned about possible presence of humpback whales.
Rescue efforts were immediately launched, with a team of shark hunters and naval personnel joining the search. However, despite extensive efforts, the son’s body was found in the whale’s stomach some 12 hours later, while the whale began to surface several times, releasing small pieces of the kayak.
"As parents, we can’t imagine the pain our son had to endure," Eduardo’s wife, 35-year-old Helena, said, visibly shaken. "We’re still trying to come to terms with what happened, and we’re left with so many questions."
The incident has sent shockwaves through the small community, with the Chilean government launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Authorities have vowed to provide support to the family, while offering counseling services to the community.
