Father and daughter die in suspected suicide in Kunnamkulam

A 52-year-old man and his teenage daughter died on Monday in an apparent family suicide attempt allegedly triggered by severe financial difficulties near Pazhanji in Kunnamkulam. The man’s wife and son are being treated in critical condition. The deceased have been identified as Sibi (52) and his daughter Aleena (19) of Madakkanaykkal House in Pazhanji. Sibi’s wife Beena (42) and son Adithyan (18) were admitted to hospital after they were found to have ingested the poison.

According to the police, the incident came to light around 5:20 a.m. Sibi and Aleena were found dead in their home in a suspected suicide. Adithyan alerted the Kunnamkulam police after the family allegedly attempted suicide. He and his mother, who also ingested the poison, were initially taken to Kunnamkulam Taluk Hospital. After first aid, Beena was shifted to Government Medical College Hospital, Thrissur, while Adithyan was shifted to a private hospital in the city.

Police said Sibi returned from the Persian Gulf on July 11. Preliminary investigations indicate that acute financial obligations may have driven the family to the extreme step. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway. The bodies of Sibi and Aleena were taken to the Kunnamkulam Taluk Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
