Federation of Farmers Associations president Kurubur Shantakumar warned that any attempt to dispossess farmers who have been cultivating government land for decades would meet with a united fight from the farming community.
Addressing the farmers after launching a farmers’ initiative at Maddur in Mysuru taluk on Sunday, Mr Shantakumar said certain land mafia groups were “misusing the digitized pahan (land) records” introduced in 2002 to illegally claim ownership of land.
“Farmers are already struggling with losses due to drought, excess rain and falling crop prices. Now, after their names have entered the land records through fraudulent means, a few individuals living in the cities are pressuring the cultivators and claiming that these lands belong to them,” he said, warning that farmers would not allow such land grabbing.
He argued that farmers’ organizations would teach a proper lesson to those who try to encroach on land cultivated by farmers for many years.
Mr. Shantakumar also urged the sugar mills to immediately deposit the additional price of ₹100 per tonne of sugarcane in the farmers’ accounts as stipulated by the state government.
District general secretary Baradanapura Nagaraj, taluk president Lakshmipura Venkatesh, Varakodu Nagesh and several other leaders participated in the programme.
