A farmer’s march from Kanniyakumari to Kashmir began here on Saturday, raising various demands, including the Minimum Support Price (MSP) legislation for agricultural produce.
The march was organized under the leadership of Jagjit Singh Dallewal, National Coordinator of the United Framers’ Front (Non-Political). PR Pandian, President, Tamil Nadu All Farmers’ Associations Coordination Committee, A. Vins Anto of Kodhayar Irrigation Committee and other members of the delegations participated in the march.
Mr. Pandian told reporters that the Center has refused to waive farm loans across the country. Farmer suicides continued unabated and the government failed to provide a remunerative price for agricultural produce.
He said the United Farmers’ Front marched from Kanniyakumari to Kashmir to urge the Center to implement MSP nationwide, implement the recommendations of the MS Swaminathan Committee, repeal the Electricity Regulatory Commission Act, which aimed to abolish free electricity to farmers, and completely waive off farm loans.
The march led by Mr. Dallewal will culminate on March 19 at the Ram Leela Maidan in New Delhi, with thousands of farmers from across India participating.
Representatives of all states will go to Kashmir. He said permission has been sought to meet Chief Minister MK Stalin and if the delegation is granted, he will meet him on February 9.
