Various farmers’ organizations staged a protest under the aegis of Samyukta Kisan Morcha on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day at Prakasam Bhavan in Ongole on Monday. Samyukta Kisan Morcha leaders have called for a more vigorous fight against the “anti-farmer and anti-labour policies” adopted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government.
District Samyukta Kisan Morcha Prakasam Convener Chunduri Ranga Rao said in a media interview, “Inspired by Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev who laid down their lives for the country, a dharna was held in front of the Collector’s office. Because of the anti-farmer policies followed by the farmers in the BJP government, there are lives.”
He asked the BJP government to explain the reason for imposing a 17% duty on exports of crops grown by domestic farmers while completely scrapping the duty on commercial crops imported into the country from places like the US. He said it was shameful that the coalition government in the state was shaking its head in disgust at BJP’s policies.
The farmer leader further asked the state government to support the groundnut farmers who are suffering due to the export and import policies of the central government. “The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), founded by former chief minister NT Rama Rao, claims to be a farmers’ party but is unable to support farmers in the state. It is a disgrace to the TDP leaders,” he said.
