Farmers in the state are in dire need of compensation after being hit by heavy rains and Cyclone Montha, back to back. Not only has no compensation been paid for the losses incurred, but no effective crop insurance system in the state is making the situation worse, voluntary organization Rythu Swarajya Vedika (RSV) said on Wednesday and demanded immediate action.
The organizations, along with farmer leaders and associations from various districts, met at a round table here at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram on Wednesday to discuss the crisis.
According to preliminary estimates submitted by the government, he said Cyclone Montha and August rains damaged standing crops on 4.72 million acres and 2.36 million acres. However, the government has yet to pay compensation to farmers – not only for recent losses, but also for losses reported in March and April. While preliminary estimates put losses in the millions of acres, the final loss recognized by the government was only about 20%. The state government also claims that the funds for this have not been sanctioned by the Union government.
In addition to the inconsistent recording of losses, the forum also drew attention to the exclusion of tenants. Telangana is the only state in the country which lacks any kind of crop insurance scheme from 2020, they said while recalling the manifesto promise of the Congress to introduce an effective scheme.
The leaders demanded that all outstanding subsidies and crop loss arrears during the Kharif season should be immediately credited to farmers’ bank accounts. The requirements also include the preparation of a final list of losses, including the correction of discrepancies; launch of new farmer-friendly crop insurance from this Rabi season; transparent assessment of crop loss and publication of list at village level; a standard subsidy of ₹ 15,000 per acre should be adopted for losses on rain-fed land as well as on irrigated land.
RSV leaders present at the Rundtable were B. Condal, Kanganti Ravi, Vissa Kiran and others.
