With an apron downstream through the Kausery in Mukcomb (Upper Anicut) near Tiruchi, which remained in a damaged state in the last few years, representatives of farmers in the region called on the government to sanction funds for its rapid repair.
The apron is a vital structure that prevents water flow from fire. The concrete floor on the riverbed and huge boulders of aprons, downstream, downstream across the Cauvera River in Mukkombu suffered extensive damage and lay in mess.
Some of the huge concrete boulders lie in a pile in several places and sank in other places into the river. Damage was largely due to severe water discharge by an average of more than a hundred days during the monsoon in 2021.
The boundaries across kauses and collides in the muccomb are important irrigation structures for regulating water flow to the delta. From there, the flow of water in Kausery and Grand Anicut manages the waters of water resources. Whenever there is a surplus flow, the water is diverted from there to Kollidam.
In 1977 the fire was firing through the case. Between 1974 and 1977, fire was built for 594.30 meters. It was designed for a maximum discharge of 1,80,000 CUSECS and almost 12 lakh acres in the Delta area is irrigated through the head.
In 2024, the WRD took up comprehensive repairs on 41 fire closures at an estimated cost of 17 GBP Crore. However, the work did not cover the apron.
“The apron should be immediately reconstructed so that it does not cause damage to the Barrage Foundation. It is essential that the irrigation regulator, which is an important regulator of irrigation, is properly maintained,” said Mahadhanapuram V. Rajaram, President, Cauver Cauver Association.
A proposal handed over
The WRD sources said the proposal to repair the aprons at the price of about 150 GBP Crore was handed over to the government for approval. However, with the fact that the project is not included in the state budget or ministry of grants, farmers claim that the government should pay special attention to ensuring proper maintenance of the apron.
N. Veerasecaran, State Secretary, Bharatiya Kisan Sangam, expressed concern about the cover of the apron, that the government should take immediate measures to repair the cover during the non-mock season. “We expected a sanction for the funds for the project in the budget,” he said.
Due to the heavy water flow in 2018, he pointed to the collapse of part of the thumb over Kolidam and called for the aprons.
Srirangam DMK Mla M. Palaniyandi, who recently established this problem in the assembly while talking to Hindu, expressed the certainty that the funds would soon be sanctioned.
