
Farmer officials have complained that recent heavy rains and hailstorms have damaged crops in some districts of north Karnataka and demanded compensation.
Farmers growing grapes in Athani taluk and vegetable and horticultural crops in Hukkeri in Belagavi district and some villages in Vijayapura district suffered damage, said Chunappa Pujari, Karnataka rajya raitha sangha leader.
Grape cultivation has suffered greatly in Basavana Bagewadi, Kolhar, Mulawad, Tikota, Mudde Bihal and Nidagundi, Ittangihal and surrounding areas. In some villages, harvested crops left to dry were also destroyed. Farmers have suffered heavy losses and the state government should compensate us, Abdul Rasheed Inamdar, head of the Grape Growers Association, told reporters in Vijayapur.
