Congress leader Girish Gadigeppagoudar urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to initiate a CID inquiry into the case of alleged police atrocities on farmers in Hubballi or hand over the case to the Lokayukta for investigation.
Mr. Gadigeppagoudar, who met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the Hubballi Airport on Saturday, submitted a memorandum to him in this regard after informing him about farmers’ complaints and alleged that few police officials were threatening farmers and forcibly taking money from them.
He said in the memorandum that police officials called Mallikarjun Siddappa Hiremani and other farmers of Halyal village in Hubballi taluk to the police station, threatened them and forcibly took money worth several crores from them in connection with the sale of their agricultural land.
He said that acting on behalf of farmer Monappa Nandihalli, two real estate dealers Dilip Sutar and Praveen Sutar made a land deal with a well-known doctor from Hubballi, but after taking money from the doctor, they cheated the Nandihalli family. They even threatened farmers at gunpoint when they went to get money. Worse, when the farmers went to the police station to seek justice, they were harassed and threatened by three police inspectors under the police commissioner, he said in a memo.
