The annual Ellu Amavasya festival of the farming community was celebrated with religious fervor in Yadgir district on Friday.
Accompanied by friends, the farming families performed rituals to worship Mother Earth and made offerings of food mixed with jowar.
“It is the paramount duty of every farmer to honor Mother Earth by making offerings to the fields with a prayer for a good yield in the rabi season,” said Chandrashekhargouda Bilwar, a farmer from Hadnur village.
Traditionally, it is a form of thanksgiving to Mother Earth, during which farmers offer a special puja on their farmland before a communal feast.
“We are indebted to Mother Earth. Through pujas and offerings, we thank Mother Earth. It has been a practice for centuries. It will continue for centuries,” said Bheem Reddy, who also belongs to a farming family.
The feast usually consists of a variety of dishes including jowar and bajra rotis, groundnut chutney, spicy rice and millet dishes and sweets.
The day starts early for farm families as they have to prepare a special feast before heading out to their farmland. “We start preparing food early in the morning. The usual practice is to share it with others after the puja,” said another farmer, Rudragouda Patil.
