A 42-year-old farmer was arrested by Natrampalli police in Tirupattur on Friday for allegedly killing another farmer over a dispute over sharing water from a common farm well for irrigation.
Police said the arrested farmer was identified as K. Sathiyan, a resident of Athur Kuppam village near Natrampalli town in the district. The victim, G. Illavarasan, 42, was a neighbor and a farmer.
Initial investigations revealed that Sathiyan and Gopal, Illavarasan’s father, had been cultivating their farmland by drawing water from a common farm well located in the middle of both the farmlands for many years. The two farmers had a dispute over the ownership of the farm well.
Police said it was around 7.30 am on Friday when Illavarasan, Gopal and his family members came to cut neem near the farmer’s well. Sathiyan and his family objected to this as they claimed ownership of the tree. Police said there was a heated argument between the two. They also traded blows. Sathiyan in a fit of rage hit Illavarasana with a sharp object. Illavarasan collapsed on the spot.
He was immediately rushed to Government Taluk Hospital in Natrampalli town where doctors said he was brought dead. A case has been registered. The police arrested Sathiyan, who was later lodged in a sub-jail in Tirupattur town. A probe is underway.
