The 62 -year -old farmer was killed on Monday in an attack by a wild elephant in Santhanpar Panchayat in Idukki. The deceased was identified as Joseph, aka Veruchami, from Choondal near Chinnakkanal. According to local people, the incident occurred around 10 hours while working on a cardamom plantation in Choondal.
Although he tried to escape from noticing the presence of a wild Tusker – local people say it was Chakka Koma – the animal was pedaling. When they were intimated, the Rapid Response team members (RRT) from the Devicula Range office came to the place, chased an elephant and moved the man to the hospital. The body was later transported to the Medical College Hospital, Idukki, as Post Mort.
Joseph survived his wife Njanammal and their children Immanuel, Jancy and Esther. Officer Forest Forest Assortment Devikulam Akhil Babu said that the forest department will immediately provide compensation to the family.
He added that it was still not known to which the elephant attacked the farmers. “In addition to Chakka, a herd of 13 wild elephants camps in the area of cardamom plantation,” the clerk said.
